Description
This is a game started for the 2025 Rae Jam for playdate
and it is currently a Work In Progress.
Theme:
Freedom, however fleeting! Your dour Master has granted his apprentice a day off in town, a minor miracle. Alas his dourness is only exceeded by his frugality – your spending money amounts to three copper pennies. It's next to nothing, yet exactly the sum needed to try your luck at a game of 'Coin Chaos' in the town tavern.
Inspiration:
The Indian game Carrom, those shiny polygonal metal D&D coin sets you can buy and a little bit of Pool and Pinball combined.
Mechanics:
You start with three coins to the left side of the board, and a pattern of coins on the board. The goal is to sink the darker coins into any pocket, by flicking your coins down the table - before you run out of coins!
Each coin you get two flicks. One to launch the coin from the left side, and one once it's in the play area.
Other coins can be sunk and added to your collection to flick, but you can only launch collected coins once.
Technical:
Using the playdate C SDK and a build of the Chipmunk2d physics engine, I wanted to see what is the simplest physics based game I could create that will operate at 50FPS on the playdate hardware.
I also want to try and do something more interesting than a simple Pool style clone which is what this currently is. Obvious things are like special coins, coin effects, different levels, board obstacles...
From the technical side I want to play around with animation easing in C, and perhaps make the coins more visually interesting in the game jam.
